Florida Libertarians continued their campaign to empower people in local office with Libertarian tools. 7 Libertarians were elected to local offices, and many took appointive offices or were confirmed, bringing the total to a new high of 46 in public office from 5 in 2000. While the number of Libs in office will go down slightly over coming months due to retirements, this has been a rise since beginning with 5 in 2000.
The LPF and Florida Libertarians are presently focusing on elective non-partisan and appointive offices, along with work on amendments.
Libertarian supported tax reduction amendments were passed helping householders and businesses with energy, conservation, and seaside improvements, following the success of Libertarians work to extend the homestead exemption this year. Amendment 2 on civil marriages was hailed as a victory as now almost 40% of voters accept the concept, and an Amendment legalizing land ownership by immigrants was almost passed and supporters say they will try again. Libertarian leaders such as Karl Dickey are on the boards of civil union groups. ma eanwhile, protests against anti-civil union rights-grabs are starting nationwide: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6228676/
