About...

OUR MISSION...

Publish inspirational, Florida-oriented news of Libertarian progress, aims and achievements.

In 1970 the Florida Libertarian Community consisted of 5 people: Ralph Swanson, M. Gilson, Carmen Bordenave, Lillian de Lemos, and Mogi de Lemos. They founded what became the LPF, assisted in creating  parties in several other states and abroad, called for a national and world political movement, and created FLORIDA LIBERTY--the FLLIB--to chronicle progress.

In a short time they had helped bring the initiative process, expanded advisory boards, and a tax limitation amendment to Florida. Libertarianism isn't just about political management by voluntaruy means, but a broad interest in self-empowerment and development. Today, in State House elections, over 15% of Floridians Libertarian. With some 16,000 and growing registereds and numerous e-clubs, think-tanks and allied coalitions, the community is growing.

We publish with especial attention to the...

  • Wins and key projects of LIO Clubs and member solo or team projects, of Libertarian initiatives and people in public office, the LPF, Libertarian think tanks, profiles of activists, coalitions where Libertarians are at work, and
  • News of Libertarian-oriented work, applied non-political Libertarianism and 'Libertarian ideas in the culture' in Florida.
  • We include occasional thinkpieces, editorials, and news of Sister Libertarian groups in Costa Rica and Serbia.

At this new site, we'll be transferring key stories well into 2011 so please be patient as you scroll through past years.

OUR HISTORY

When the Libertarians Party for Florida, today the LPF, was founded in 1970, the Florida Liberty was created by Ralph Swanson as an occasional circular to document activity of all Libertarians in Florida. In the early '80's it separated operations from the Libertarian Party of Florida as an arm of the Phoenix Action Commitee, with the arrangement that it would always publish official LPF news but remain editorially independent as a conduit for Libertarian internal discussion as well...good or bad.

If you're a Libertarian in Florida today, you can thank the Florida Liberty. Via the Action Committee and its successor projects, it created, expanded and shared the first d-base of Florida Libertarians and led the fight to allow Libertarians to register as such in Florida, first proposed foundation of a national and eventual international party and movement, hosted discussions that created many Florida Libertarian projects, exposed attempts by to seize control of Libertarian groups, and brought focus to many Libertarian successes. Above all, it has documented Libertarian wins, becoming "the best and model newsletter of Libertarian activism, it often has led the movement by documenting and profiling unsung progress..." (Harry Browne, 2000 LP Presidential candidate).

We've gone from paper newsletter to web news source! While maintaining its obligations to publish official news summaries and independent editorials or data on LPF operations, in recent years it has completely separated from the LPF (which has its own occasional zine and announce list). This involved  updating to a web format, including this site for wins and activist links, a yahoo group for current activities and editorials, occasional PDF zines. As of late mid 2009 we're working on  several web conduits such as Twitter, linking to Libertarian toolsites and manual archives, and developing associated archive sites. We're also posting key stories of past years  here from old editions of the FLLIB, and great Media Quotes that you can use in discussing Libertarianism!

Please send a story of your win (don't forget photographs) to our yahoo group!
